My new (old) truck

We bought a truck the other day. I think it's a little on the flashy side & I think I'll remove the base ball cap thing on the top of the cab. It's a 1999 with 170,000. miles on it, but not a scratch on the original paint job.
I felt a little guilty about the whole thing as my 1971 IH still runs, but as a friend said: "It is ok to buy a new used truck every three decades". It also has a nice place for Daisy dog to ride behind the front seats.
And the IH:

I'll miss the dump bed, but the new one has a M12,000 Warn winch on it which will be useful while cutting firewood for the winter.

  1. Oh no! You're getting rid of the IH?

  2. Looks nice. Is that one of those 7.3 powerstroke (IH) diesels? They have a very good reputation. How do you keep that old IH so rust free in your climate? They tend to rust out here even in dry old south Sask.

    1. 7.3L with an upgraded Garret turbo & inter-cooler. Somebody had a camper on it & kept it indoors, as there is no rust or holes or dents in the bed.
I've had the IH in Florida for most of it's life & it has always been garaged both in Oregon & Florida. I still had to do some rust repair & two paint jobs since 1971 when my Dad bought it new. After having had a semi hit me in another truck, I've become leery of the fact thet the IH has the fuel tanks on the sides outside the frame. The right side has the filler line coming through the cab. You can imagine where the gas would go if it were hit on the right side. I'm getting more careful lately..

    2. So does this mean I have to buy a John Deere to be allowed on your farm?
Are you going to start wearing short pants in the summer?
Oh well, that is progress, as they say on the Jeffersons, "movin on up!"

    3. Budde: I'll still associate with some of the rabble. Don't worry.
There is too much poison oak here to wear short pants & anyway, it would bother the cows.
I could afford a used Ford, not a Deere. Parts are too high. I found that out the hard way.

    4. You should get mud flaps that say "back off" or have a chrome nekked lady on them!

    5. That's a nice truck. I used to try to drive a truck built two decades back but lately I've been getting behind.

  3. Budde: Actually it came with a chrome elk on each mud flap.
I know. I need to strip some of the bling off of it. It is in really good shape though. Not a scratch on the original paint job, no smoke, and every thing works except the winch. The winch won't turn, but it's probably just dirty contacts as I don't think it was ever used more than once or twice.
"Who was that winch? That was a ladle I used to spoon with."

  4. Congratulations on getting a new truck! How's driving it? It’s rather impressive that it has already gone approximately 170,000 miles, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise since trucks are made to last longer than their small car counterparts. I hope you’re enjoying your new car! Drive well and keep safe! :)

    1. Thanks!
It will take a little getting used to the long wheel base. Especially when backing around a corner as the front swings out pretty far, but it tracks & drives great!

  5. I must say that you made a very good choice on your new truck. Though I think your IH looks pretty reliable too. Trucks are ideal for transporting loads of stuff from one place to another. These types of vehicles are made for moving and hauling things and can also be trusted on long drives and extreme road conditions. Hope that Daisy is enjoying her new ride!

  6. Your truck reminds me of the road trip that my family had last summer. My family had an out of town trip together with some of family members on my mother’s side. It was fun! The adults had a comfortable ride, but the youngsters had a more enjoyable ride, because we’re on the back of the truck, singing aloud as we felt the wind blowing on our face. :) It’s really a great feeling!
