Getting the honey house in shape

I may have posted this photo before, I'm not sure, but I'm partial to it & this post needed a bee so here it is!.

Everything is wired at last. Lots of outlets and three sets of switched lights, center section and each end. That way I save a little power using only what I need.  The 3'x8' work table at the east end is in, and the little compressor plugged in under it. It is nice to be getting all the bee stuff in one place. There are lots of jigs, tools, and wood ware still in the basement. I still need a rack to hang frames and a couple of shelves, but it's almost done. I salvaged a couple of old tool box drawers from the  wreck we had moving here & used a set of slides I scored at the dump. Someone tossed a dozen nice drawer slides, so I quietly picked them up. The landfill doesn't approve of those things. They would rather see them buried. One day I picked up a dozen tee posts.

Plenty of storage room on top at either end.
Excuse the tippy camera phone photo.

  1. Very nice set up!!!! I am jealous of your 9 frame electric extractor too :) I am still using a 3 frame hand crank one. I may need to upgrade next year though.

  2. Yes, 9 deep/18 western frames at once. I am satisfied it was a worthy purchase. Last year I pulled 8 gallons, this year 18 gal.'s from three out of 8 hives. With the cut outs & swarms my producing hives have increased each year. I can't see turning a crank that much. I'm pretty sure I clean out more honey than I would if it wasn't powered. I just let it spin until they are dry.

    1. How bad is it when the frames are out of balance weight-wise? Is it heavy enough to ignore it?

    2. Oh and how do you clean it out? I usually load mine up and take it into the car wash.

  3. Actually it came a little out of alignment. I was disapointed, but I needed it & a return was too much of a hassle. When the frames are all perfect I can run it up close to full speed but it still shakes. I just ran it longer at a slower speed. Still a lot faster than a hand crank would turn it. Actually I haven't cleaned it yet. I bolted it to a couple of 2x4s screwed onto a piece of plywood. I'm just going to slide that over & tip it onto the ground & fire up the pressure washer. It's kind of heavy, so that would be the easy way.

  4. That room is a place of beauty. I wish I could keep organised like that!

    1. Thanks, but in reality: Organization like that only happens once for me. At the initial setup. After that it progressively deteriorates.
